University amends policy on student protests

Seton Hall’s executive cabinet revised the student demonstration policy a few weeks ago, which included the prohibition of indoor protests. This revision follows a protest campaign from Concerned 44 that utilized sit-in tactics at Presidents Hall.

During the evening of Jan. 26 several Seton Hall students were approached by four males who were identified as part of the group, God the Mother, and asked to discuss their religious beliefs with the students.

Over the past decade, the rate of students using college counselling resources has increased across the United States, according to Seton Hall’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).

Seton Hall finally has a president

In an email to the student body on Monday, Chairman of the Board of Regents Patrick Murray announced that the board had appointed Dr. Joseph Nyre of Iona College to lead the University. The position has been filled in the interim by Dr. Mary Meehan, who assumed the role of Interim University President following the departure of Dr. Gabriel Esteban to DePaul University in July 2017. Nyre will officially assume the position on Aug. 1.

Adam Varoqua, a senior psychology and social and behavioral sciences major, had a meeting with Monsignor Anthony Ziccardi before Christmas break to discuss the removal of a link to Courage International, previously included on Seton Hall University’s Campus Ministry website.

‘Spotlight’ lawyer accuses Newark archdiocese of defending abusive priest

Mitchell Garabedian, the celebrated lawyer known for representing the sexual abuse victims of Roman Catholic priests in the Boston area, recently accused the Archdiocese of Newark of blaming the alleged victims of Rev. Michael “Mitch” Walters in order to protect him. Walters is accused of abusing five boys and one girl decades ago. Walters graduated from Seton Hall in 1977 with a BA in religious studies.

The United States partial government shutdown continues into its 34th day today, leaving more than 800,000 federal employees furloughed or working without pay and making it the longest shutdown in history.

A North Carolina-based student housing management company has a proposal develop new luxury student apartments on Valley Street in South Orange. The project will be unaffiliated with Seton Hall University, but could serve as another location for students to live.

Raised in the suburbs of San Francisco in Palo Alto, Calif., Elizabeth McCole, grew up in the high-pressured environment of Silicon Valley, where she was expected to graduate from a top college and get a job as a highly-paid professional. Instead, she decided to move to the East Coast to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. Now a senior Theatre and Communication double major at Seton Hall University, McCole has proven herself time and again on stage.

Professor awarded national ranking

On Jan. 11, Dr. Robert Kelchen, an Assistant Professor with the Department of Education Leadership, Management and Policy, ranked No. 32 out of the top 200 professors a group of national educators ranked, which looked at approximately 20,000 faculty in total. Education Week and American Enterprise Institute made this announcement.
