The ladies of the Seton Hall and Rutgers basketball teams are set to meet in historic Walsh Gymnasium on Monday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.
The news was first reported by Gannet New Jersey.
The game will showcase the in-state rivalry between the two schools and will be a key non-conference game for both teams.
New Jersey State Senator Richard Codey sent a letter to the athletic directors of both schools upon hearing the news that they would meet in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, urging them to team up on an annual rivalry game. He also suggested that a doubleheader should be played the same day the men’s teams play, who compete once a season in the Garden State Hardwood Classic.
Despite Codeys’s suggestion, the men’s teams will play on Dec. 5 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway.
The women’s teams met in the last two postseasons, as Rutgers beat the Hall in double overtime in the third round of the 2014 NIT. This past season, the teams met in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Rutgers came out victorious only to lose in the next round to UConn.
Head coach Tony Bozzella, the 2015 Big East Coach of the Year, played an active part in making this series happen. Head coach of Rutgers and Hall of Famer C. Vivian Stringer was initially cautious of anything that might hurt her team’s RPI, but accepted the idea as the Hall became more successful.
