Phyllis Mangina will step down as head coach of the women's basketball team, as announced by Athletics Director Joe Quinlan early Monday evening.
Mangina just completed her 25th season at the Hall as head coach, leading the team to a last place finish in the Big East with a 9-21 (1-15 in conference) record.
The team dropped its first round game in the 2010 Big East Championship against Syracuse, 65-42, on March 5 at the XL Center in Hartford, CT, to effectively end the season.
"Coach Mangina's contributions to the Seton Hall women's basketball program and the entire University community have been substantial and longstanding," Quinlan said in a statement. "Discussions are ongoing regarding a continued role for Phyllis at the University, and I look forward to working with her in a new capacity."
A point guard from 1977-1981 for the Pirates, Mangina has been the face of the women's basketball program for the last two decades despite touting a sub-.500 record. She will leave Seton Hall with a 352-368 career win-loss mark, two NCAA Tournament berths (1994, 1995) and three appearances in the WNIT (2003, 2004 and 2007).
"I will forever cherish my time as the women's basketball coach at Seton Hall," said Mangina in a statement. "I have had the chance to develop so many special relationships over the years, and I could not be prouder of the success my players and I have shared on the court and in the classroom."
The press release from Athletics also said that "a national search for a replacement will begin immediately."
