At the beginning of the semester, the Seton Hall Career Center launched a weekly
“Anything that relates to what you want to do when you leave Seton Hall and how to get there – that’s exactly what we make sure to cover,” Reesa Greenwald, the director of the Career Center, said.
Greenwald said the topics range from resume writing and networking to secrets on acing the interview. She explained that the topics and times are also always changing to provide each student with the opportunity to attend every program, despite their fluctuating schedules.
“Resumes and cover letters aren’t supposed to be obstacles for you to jump through in order to apply for a job,” she said. “They’re tools designed to help you stand out from the crowd and be the successful candidate employers want to get to know.”
Greenwald added that although the Career Center has been hosting workshops for a while, the topics are continuously evolving to keep up with the ever-changing needs of students, employers and the world in general.
Amber Puig, a senior broadcasting and visual media major, credited the Career Center in helping her ultimately land her internship at CNBC.
“They really help me to understand what points of my personality to highlight through my resume and cover letter,” she said. “The workshops were really helpful in teaching how to dress professionally while still allowing me to show some of [my] personality.”
Nancy Borkowski, associate director of the Career Center, said these workshops are just a starting point for all that the Career Center has to offer. “We’re trying to do more to get to where students already are, and if that means going out to student organizations and into classrooms to host these events, we’re happy to do that,” Borkowski said.
The Career Center also developed a resource page and tool kit to pair with a real-time calendar for the department, Borkowski said. “We worked to create something that was both user-friendly and a one-stop shop for students,” she said.
Greenwald explained that when something comes up that seems to be important in today’s world and may be something they haven’t covered yet, the Center will make sure to create an event that addresses those topics.
Greenwald said, “I know how talented you are, but I want to read your resume and know the employer will be able to tell the major impact you have had and will have – and we’re here to help you with that.”
