After a competitive five sets, the Seton Hall volleyball team fell at home to the Georgetown Hoyas, 3-2. The Pirates won back-to-back sets in the second and third to get the lead, but Georgetown forced a fifth set and snagged the win.
The Hall was led by junior Danielle Schroeder and freshman Cherise Hennigan, who each contributed 12 kills. Strong contributions also came from freshman Sophia Coffey, who notched a team-high 36 assists, and senior Amanda Hansen with four blocks.
The teams exchanged wins during the first two sets, but the Pirates found themselves facing a 15-10 deficit following a five-point run by Georgetown. Seton Hall took a timeout to address what the team needed to stop the run.
“Someone needs to step up and someone needs to put the ball away, and I believe Danielle Schroeder came out of that and got a kill for us right away,” head coach Allison Yeager later reflected.
Following that timeout, Schroeder’s kill ignited a 9-1 run to ensure a Pirate victory in the third set.
“It’s all about us being aggressive and taking swings, and we did it then. That got our energy going,” Yaeger said.
Georgetown went on to win the fourth set on a 7-1 run that started from a kill from freshman Liv King, who notched a total of 15 kills. Freshman Symone Speech played a crucial role for the Hoyas with a match-high 17 kills, and freshman Paige McKnight had an impressive match-high 50 assists.
The fifth set saw Georgetown make a strong offensive push to win led by a combined eight kills between King and Speech. Following this defeat, the Hall falls to 4-4 in games that reach five sets, and Yeager sees some room to improve in that fifth set.
“We have a lot of good hitters that can put the ball away, but a lot of our hitters need a very specific set,” she said. “We can’t do that if we’re not passing well.”
The Pirates, now with a record of 11-13, will look to bounce back from the loss when they play a Halloween match against Creighton at home.
