Brittany Morris eclipsed 900 points as the women's basketball team (9-17, 4-9) improved their home record to 8-7 after a 72-56 win over Providence (7-18, 2-10) on Wednesday.
In the first half, the Pirates were able to control the pace and jump edout to a five point lead. The Hall's momentum started to slip away in the middle of the half when the Friars' Evi Ilskola hit a long jumper with 6:24 left in the first half to tie the game at 14.
The Pirates started the game missing a key element of their offense; senior shooting guard Morris hadn't quite found her long range jumper yet.
Once Morris' jumper woke up, she eventually led the Pirates with 15 points in the first half, including the 900th point of her career on a jumper from the top of the key in the midst of an 11-2 Seton Hall run.
Morris, who broke the Seton Hall 3-point record in the previous game against South Florida, has enjoyed the final weeks of her college career. The senior is unfazed by the potential upcoming 1,000 point milestone.
"When you overthink it, things happen, but I'm just excited, I'm blessed," Morris said. "Everything keeps coming so I'm just loving it."
The half ended with the Pirates leading 33-21. Ka-Deidre Simmons added 10 points and Alexis Brown grabbed seven rebounds in the half.
The Hall didn't get out to the same running start in the second half, allowing Providence to score on their first two possessions. Simmons got things going for the Pirates once again though by hitting a 3-pointer in transition.
Just two possessions later, Brown was able to pick up a shot that was blocked by Alexandra Maseko and go coast-to-coast for the lay-in. The Pirates outscored Providence 17 to 4 on the fast break.
"We love to run and outscoring other teams in transition is something we try and do every time out," head coach Anne Donovan said.
Donovan was also pleased that her team was able to out rebound their opponent (41-25) following a few tough outings for the Pirates on the glass.
Brown finished with a total of nine rebounds and 11 points while Maseko grabbed 10 boards. Morris led all scorers with 27 points and Simmons added another 21 for the Pirates.
The Pirates' will be back in action Saturday in Connecticut to take on the No. 3 Huskies at 4 p.m. and then return home for senior night on March 2 at 9 p.m. in Walsh Gym against St. John's.
