A Seton Hall management group is running the first flip card cheer in University history to take place at 9:00 p.m. on Dec. 2 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.
The cheer will be aired live on ESPNU for the men's basketball game against Auburn.
According to Junior Andrew Kriner, a member of the management team, students sitting in the student section will be given blue and white poster sized cards.
Students will be instructed to flip them to either the blue or white side during the game, Kriner said.
"The stakes are pretty high and we need to make sure that everyone knows what they are supposed to do," Kriner said. "Student awareness is so important for this because we've never done this before."
This will be the first time that a flip card cheer will be used at SHU, Kriner said.
"Since there is really no way to do a rehearsal for the cheers, the first time we will be doing this is on national television," Kriner said.
According to Kriner, the management group was broken up into teams.
"One team was responsible for designing the cheers, one team is responsible to obtain the materials and make sure the cheers are run smoothly during the game," Kriner said
Part of the group is also responsible for marketing the game and filling the student section.
The management group is part of Dr. Karen Boroff's Principles of Management class and has worked on a series of other sports related projects this semester, Kriner said.
According to Kriner, focusing on sports was a topic that was assigned to the group.
"We just had the choice of what exactly we wanted to do for the project," Kriner said.
Kriner said that two of the groups in the class worked on a project for the women's basketball game against Michigan that included bringing a new snack to the SHUbar and marketing the game to the school.
"Although the women lost, the game was a huge success for the two groups," Kriner said. "The snacks were a hit, with the SHUbar winning the vote as the fan favorite, and Walsh gym was fuller than it has ever been during this time of year for a women's game."
According to Kriner, the class loved the idea of doing the flip card cheer for a sports game.
"The basketball games are a pretty big production here at Seton Hall, and for our class to put together something that will be used during the games and live on ESPNU, it's very exciting," Kriner said.
Kriner said the cheer will also be a great way to spread school spirit around SHU and possibly start up a new tradition.
"We are very excited for this to happen and hopefully for it to stick as a tradition at SHU," Kriner said.
