The Department of Catholic Studies and the Department of Classical Studies are each offering a three-credit study abroad faculty-led course, which will culminate in a joint 10-day trip to Spain over spring break.
“Catholic Studies faculty-led study abroad is more than a decade old,” according to Dr. Ines Murzaku, professor of religious studies at Seton Hall. Dr. Murzaku will be teaching the course, along with Dr. Raymond Capra, assistant professor of classical studies.
The course, Foundations of Christian Culture, examines the foundations of Christian culture in Spain, from the time of Roman rule, to the Renaissance and into modern day. This course can be taken as any of these classes: CAST 3994/CORE 3748; CLAS 4309/ARCH/SPAN 3309; or an Honors seminar. Only students who have taken either both Core classes or an introductory level Catholic Studies course are eligible to register for the three-credit class in the spring.
On the tour of Spain, students will visit sites that are covered in the course readings including: museums, cathedrals, cloisters and Roman and Greek sites in a number of cities including Barcelona, Girona, Empuries, Montserrat, Montblanc and Tarragona, according to Dr. Murzaku. The trip costs $3,000 total, which includes economy airfare, museum and tourist site entries, bus transportation, hotel accommodations, all lunches and two dinners.
Students interested in registering for the course should send a one-page application explaining why they want to take the course, what they hope to learn from it and how it will help them in their major. The applications should be submitted by email to Alexandra Benson at alexandra.benson@shu.edu and should be titled “Spain Trip Application.” Dr. Murzaku suggests that interested students apply as soon as possible as there are only 24 available spots and they fill up quickly.
Any questions about the program can be sent to Dr. Murzaku at ines.murzaku@shu.edu, Dr. Capra at raymond.capra@shu.edu or Alexandra Benson at alexandra.benson@shu.edu.
