Seton Hall men's soccer: Pirates overtake Peacocks in weeknight game

Three unanswered goals lifted the men's soccer team over the St. Peter's Peacocks on Monday night.

The victory gives the Hall their first four game unbeaten streak since 2009, while improving the record to 3-1-1 on the season.

"A win is always great for morale," head coach Manfred Schellscheidt said. "I was not happy with the way we played though. We got dragged into their game."

The Pirates won the game despite losing starting goalkeeper and reining Big East goalkeeper of the week, sophomore Anthony Reichwaldt in the 24 minute after colliding with a teammate, on the same play the Peacocks scored their lone goal.

Sophomore Kevin Bonder stepped in for Reichwaldt and made one save in relief duty.

On the offensive side of the ball, sophomore Max Garcia led the team with 4 shots on goal with a goal and a pair of shots off the post. Senior Joe Baker and freshman Bolu Akinyode added goals for the Hall.

"Max is a dangerous player," Schellscheidt said. "He is always determined to put the ball in the net and we need that out of a forward."

The chances for the Pirates started early in the fourth minute when sophomore Victor Manosalvas hit the left post on a shot that then dribbled in front of the goal line but the put back attempt was called a foul as the ball cross the line.

In the 12th minute, Garcia took a free kick from outside the box and hit the left post and bounced towards the middle of the box before it was cleared by St. Peter's.

"The post doesn't seem to like me right now," Garcia said. "I just have to keep going at it hard."

The Peacocks got on the board first in the 25 minute following a foul near the sideline. On the free kick Reichwaldt collided with a teammate and the loose ball was put back by freshman Noah Sadoui to give St. Peter's a 1-0 lead.

Garcia took another free kick in the 31 minute that the goalkeeper had to deflect the ball over the crossbar. On the ensuing corner kick Baker headed in a cross from senior Giovanni Zammiello evening the score 1-1.

The game would remain tied till three minutes after the half. A Pirates corner kick lead to a header from freshman Konrad Plewa was saved by a St. Peter's defender heading the ball out of the goal but did not clear the box and Akinyode headed the clearing attempt into the goal.

The Hall hit the post again in the 66th minute with sophomore George Velasquez hitting the crossbar with a header.

Garcia finally got on the score sheet in the 73rd minute on a 2-on-1 breakaway against the goalie. Freshman Cody Hess received a lead pass and could have gone one-on-one with the keeper but passed the ball across the box to Garcia for the empty net goal to go up 3-1.

"(Hess) had a chance at the goal," Garcia said. "I am just glad he gave me the opportunity to score there."

St. Peter's had a chance to close the gap but the header attempt hit the crossbar and went out of play.

The Pirates return to action on Friday, Sept. 16 on the road against the Monmouth Hawks.
