Earlier this month, Seton Hall Health Services collaborated with the College of Nursing to distribute free flu shots to students. Nursing students and Health Services staff gave over 500 vaccinations in all.
Director of Health Services and certified Family Nurse Practitioner Mary Elizabeth Costello explained that the event not only contributed to the health and well-being of the student population, but also helped prepare nursing students for the workforce.
The future nurses were always supervised throughout the event and many “had already given vaccines on clinical rotations.”
There are no more events planned for this semester as of now, but students should keep an eye out for any fliers around campus or emails from Health Services. According to Costello, there are still flu vaccines, at the cost of $25 each, available at Health Services. Students are encouraged to make an appointment to receive one.
Students can also receive flu shots at the Rite Aid pharmacy on South Orange Avenue. No appointment is necessary and most insurance policies cover the cost of the shot. The upfront cost without insurance is $34.
The flu season runs from October to April and getting vaccinated can keep you from getting sick and having to miss class or work. It also lowers the chance of you becoming a carrier of the virus and infecting non-vaccinated people and high-risk individuals, such as infants and the elderly.
