The Seton Hall men’s baseball team held St. John’s scoreless in the finale of their three game series by a score of 7-0. The Pirates secured the series on Sunday by winning their second game in the three matchups which raised their Big East record to 7-8, and 34-18 overall.
Leading the way was freshman pitcher Cullen Dana who threw all nine innings and held St. John’s scoreless, surrendering a mere five hits in the contest. Dana also struck out seven batters and never gave up a walk.
Seton Hall spread its scoring across three innings, getting hot in both the third and seventh by scoring three runs in each, and scoring a single run in the fifth. The Pirates also outhit the Johnny’s by a 13-5 margin, and capitalized on their two errors to score and advance runners.
The imposing Pirate defense has been on full display this year, with the Pirates racking up twenty games of allowing two or fewer runs, including five shutouts.
“Our game plan is pretty much based on pitching and defense,” Dana said following the contest. “All year the rotation has been pretty consistent so that’s been going good for us.”
On top of the stellar Dana performance, the theme of the final home game was senior night, and the spotlight shined on senior outfielders Derek Jenkins and Zack Weigel.
Jenkins hit four-for-five including an RBI and two runs in an impressive effort that revealed his contributions beyond his historic base running.
Weigel managed two hits in his five at bats, and mirrored Jenkins with two runs and an RBI.
Fellow senior contributions came from designated hitter Brett Fontenelli’s two hits coupled with an RBI, while Chris Chiaradio earned a walk.
The Pirates will not be traveling far for their next matchup when they take on N.J.IT. in Newark, with an expected start time of 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17th.
