New club pushes fitness boundaries

PUSH athletic club has just been granted permanent status on Seton Hall’s campus, and this means big plans for the future. Included in these plans is “Bumpball for Bissainthe,” a fundraiser for Seton Hall professor Dr. Jean G. Bissainthe, whose apartment was recently destroyed by a fire. According to Dan Osika, the president of PUSH, he and the other executive board members, Quinn Laidig, Stephanie Koeller, and Evan Doolittle, have “a passion for fitness and living a healthy lifestyle, and when you combine that with our continually expanding membership…the sky is the limit for PUSH.” As described on PUSH’s Facebook page, the objective of the organization is “to create a fun, welcoming environment that students can come and improve their physical, mental, and spiritual health.” PUSH works with its members’ hectic lifestyles by giving them the tools to get fit, while planning large fitness-driven events as opposed to frequent meetings. PUSH’s executive board, along with their advisor, professor of sports psychology Dr. Andrew Simon, have worked for PUSH to participate in such events as the Color Run and Relay for Life. Now with their new official status on campus, PUSH will have the capability of holding even more unique and fun campus-wide events. Official status means an official budget and PUSH will have the freedom to help more students in their quest for fitness. PUSH is not only planning to change the Seton Hall community, but also the South Orange community. “At the student leadership conference, I talked with Mayor Torpey about the possibility of bringing certain PUSH events to the South Orange community in general, and he was very open to the idea,” Osika said. A prime example of PUSH’s attempts to give back to both the Seton Hall and South Orange communities is their upcoming event, “Bumpball for Bissainthe,” a day of Zorb Soccer to help Dr. Jean Bissainthe get back on his feet. “I always take my life in a very humble way and I am always ready for the challenges,” Bissainthe said. “This is the message that I always take into the classroom.” Brianna Bernath can be reached at brianna.bernath@student.shu. edu.
