The Visiting Chair brings in experts in the diplomacy field to work one-on-one with students and give them the opportunity to learn more about the field of diplomacy than what is taught in the classroom. Dean Andrea Bartoli of the School of Diplomacy and International Relations said that the school has a relationship with the United Nations mediation support and it is through this relationship that potential chair appointees are explored. Faculty is the ultimate decision maker when it comes to choosing who fills the position, Bartoli said. He noted that scholars who have been brought in are “very impressed with the quality of students at Seton Hall.” The SHU website states that Fluri is the deputy director of The Geneva DCAF (Democratic Control of Armed Forces’) Centre for Security, Development and the Rule of Law where he is responsible for advising governments in Eastern Europe, Asia and South America on security governance issues. Serry is a career diplomat with experience in multilateral diplomacy with NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and the United Nations. Bartoli said that the scholars have agreed to come to Seton Hall because, “For them, it is wonderful to have an opportunity to think about their practice in a context where good questions are asked, good research is done, and good interactions with students is possible.” The School of Diplomacy receives an endowment from an unnamed alumni supporter that allowed for the establishment of the Chair. The position was held last year by Youssef Mahmoud, former Special Representative for the United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic and Chad, according to the SHU website.
