It’s time to shake it up and move those feet to join in on the fun by dancing, mingling and eating in this week’s dancing workshop, hosted by the Slavic Club.
The club will be hosting its fifth annual dancing workshop, Slavic Dancing Bonanza in the Jubilee Atrium on Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m.
Nick Hlushko and Raymond Cwieka, Seton Hall University alums, will be teaching the Slavic dances at the event. Hlushko, who graduated in 2013, has been dancing for 20 years and participates in a semi-professional ensemble call Iskra for the last four years.
“The event introduces Slavic culture to the community and shows the diversity that we have
on campus,” Kuchta said.
There are no rehearsals beforehand, so club members and guests will be learning the dance choreography at the event.
“Due to the extreme complexity of these dances, my portion will focus on teaching some very basic steps and all students will have the opportunity to show off what they have learned at the end of class,” Hlushko said.
“My portion of the dance workshop as I consider it, will be comprised of traditional Ukrainian folk movements from both central and western Ukraine,” he said.
Cwieka will be teaching ballroom dance steps. Audience participation is encouraged.
“At the end of the session everyone is impressed with how much they learned,” Anna Kuchta, founder of the Slavic Club, said.
Slavic food and refreshments will be served. Kuchta said that there will be homemade food so guests get a taste of the Slavic culture. She added that it’s not nationality, it’s personality they are trying to unite.
The event is open to everyone. In the past alumni, faculty, students and members of the South Orange community have enjoyed the event. The club meets Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Fahy room 236.
