Seton Hall's Ski and Snow- board Club ventured to Killington Mountain Resort in Vermont recently on their first excursion.
Club membership consists of all skill levels and grades, ranging from freshmen to graduate students. It was founded just last year by sophomores Adriano Polimeni and Caroline Pinsky, who is the president. According to the founders, the school tried a club in the past that failed to launch, and the two "reactivated" the concept.
According to Pinsky, the trip was a big accomplishment for the club. "I don't think the Ski and Snowboard Club has ever had a trip before on this scale," she said. The group held two interest meetings at the beginning of the semester, Polimeni said. "The first meeting really took us by surprise," he said. "We were expecting maybe five people to show up, and 45 people showed up."
At interest meetings, the majority said they preferred one big trip rather than a few smaller local excursions, and this was how Vermont was chosen, according to Polimeni. The group met again later in November, then finalized plans a week before winter break.
Twenty-five students made the trip, and most did not know each other beforehand. Chase Agapito said, "The bus ride there was completely quiet and on the bus ride back, the entire five hours I heard talking." The club became very close over this three-day weekend, he said.
"I feel like everybody got along really nicely in this group," Polimeni said.
Pinsky added that after they all went to dinner Saturday night, "they didn't want to separate."
Polimeni and Pinsky offered les- sons for beginners the first day on the slopes; however, as founders they felt they got something out of the trip, too.
"This trip for us was kind of a learning experience," Polimeni said. "Hopefully it will make the future trips even better."
The founders said they plan to continue the club until their senior year and hopefully pass it on. As for the big trips, Polimeni said he hopes to make them annual, or even biannual, events.
