Hoyas take two from SHU in doubleheader

[caption id="attachment_14348" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Seton Hall Athletics[/caption] The Seton Hall Pirates baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader against the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday, April 30 at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Maryland. Game one began at 12:00 p.m., with Pirates starter Zach Prendergast facing off against Georgetown’s Simon Mathews.  Mathews won the pitching duel, throwing a complete game shutout and striking out five.  Prendergast pitched for six innings, allowing one run on six hits and three walks while striking out six. The Hoyas were held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning.  Left fielder Charlie Dillon reached on a throwing error by Pirates third baseman Joe Poduslenko. Georgetown’s catcher Eric Webber then reached on a bunt single, moving Dillon over to second base. Third Baseman Ryan Weisenberg hit a ground ball to Poduslenko, who threw to second base to get the force out.  Pirates second baseman Rob Dadona tried to turn the double play, but an errant throw to first base allowed Dillon to score the only run of the ballgame, leading to a 1-0 Hoya victory. Game two began at 3:30 p.m., with Pirates starter Cullen Dana squaring off against Georgetown’s Jack Cushing. Both offenses showed signs of life in the second game.  Georgetown scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, when center fielder Beau Hall hit a lead-off home run to left field.  Seton Hall tied the game up in the top of the second inning when Poduslenko hit a solo shot of his own.  The Hoyas would answer right back in the bottom of the second, when Hall and the designated hitter Jake Kuzbel had RBI singles and right fielder Michael Derenzi reached on an RBI fielder’s choice, making the score 4-1 in favor of Georgetown. Seton Hall would cut the Hoya lead to just two runs in the top of the fourth when Poduslenko hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score catcher Matt Fortin.  Georgetown also scored in the fourth inning when Derenzi brought in Webber on an RBI single.  The Pirates brought in another run in the top of the sixth on a home run by first baseman Mikael-Ali Mogues.  Georgetown answered right back with two solo shots of their own; one from Weisenberg in the sixth and one from Kuzbel to begin the seventh.  Georgetown would win the second game by a score of 7-3. The Pirates fall to 31-14 on the year, while Georgetown improves to 22-24.  Seton Hall resumes action on Friday, May 6^th when they open up the first of a three game series against the Xavier Musketeers at Owen T. Carroll field in South Orange, New Jersey at 6:00 p.m.
