Kevin McGlynn has signed on as head coach for the Seton Hall women’s tennis program, taking over a Pirates squad which he also coached from 1991-96, Seton Hall announced Wednesday. McGlynn’s hiring comes after Riza Zalameda resigned, citing personal reasons. “We are excited that Kevin is returning to Seton Hall to lead our women’s tennis program,” Seton Hall athletic director Pat Lyons said in a press release. “He had terrific success here in his first tenure as the program’s head coach, and with his expertise and his past experience, we know our student-athletes will be ready to compete.” [caption id="attachment_22212" align="aligncenter" width="838"] Photo via SHU Athletics[/caption] McGlynn previously led the Pirates during some of the program’s most successful years, earning a 70-34 dual match record in his first stint. Other milestones previously achieved under McGlynn include the program’s only undefeated season, the 17-0 campaign in 1992, a runner-up finish at the Big East Championship in 1994 and the Hall’s lone NCAA Tournament bid, where the Pirates fell to William and Mary in the first round of the East regional in 1996. In addition to coaching the Pirates, McGlynn has served as both the director of tennis and general manager of the Bradford Bath and Tennis Club and Cedar Grove, N.J., recently closing out a 36-year association with the organization. McGlynn’s strong coaching record stemmed from his own collegiate career. He compiled a 103-27 record while at Upsala College in East Orange, N.J., earning a No. 5 ranking in the NCAA Mid-States Region in the process. “I could not be more thrilled to be back at Seton Hall,” McGlynn stated in the press release. He will take over a Pirate team in the midst of their spring season. The Hall reached the Big East Championship semifinals last year and have a 3-6 team record in 2018. The Pirates are looking to build momentum heading into Big East play, following a 1-2 week in Los Angeles from March 5 to 9. Seton Hall has posted wins against Marist, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Youngstown State this season, and will look to improve their .333 win percentage as the season goes on. The first match of McGlynn’s second tenure takes place on March 24 against LIU-Brooklyn. The Pirates have one more non-conference match, facing Hofstra on March 30 in South Orange, before six consecutive Big East matches to close out the regular season. The conference season will conclude with the Big East Championships in Columbia, S.C., from Apr. 25 to 29. Kyle Beck can be reached at kyle.beck@student.shu.edu or on Twitter @notkylebeck.
