Edwin named Big East Defensive Player of the Year

Senior Fuquan Edwin was tabbed as the 2013-14 Big East Defensive Player of the Year on Monday morning.

For the second time in three seasons, Edwin led the conference in steals and currently ranks third nationally, averaging 2.85 steals per game.

On six occasions this season Edwin recorded five or more steals in a game on his way to breaking the Seton Hall record for career steals. He eclipsed Dan Callandrillo's record of 260 with his five steals in a win at Georgetown on Jan. 18.

Now with 292 career steals, Edwin is second only to Ohio State's Aaron Craft for most steals among active NCAA Division I players.

Edwin is just the second player in program history to earn the award. Program Hall of Famer Jerry Walker received the award for his play during the 1992-93 season.

Edwin was also named to the All-Big East Second team. He averaged 15.8 points per game in conference play and was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll six times.

In 26 games, Edwin posted 16 double-digit scoring efforts and eclipsed 20 points eight times.

Freshman point guard Jaren Sina was named to the All-Big East Rookie Team, becoming the first player to earn this honor since Jeremy Hazell in 2007-08.

The guard finished with 6.2 points per game, but stepped up during conference play. He hit 40.4 percent from 3-point land and held a 1.54 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Edwin and Sina will join the rest of the No. 8 seed Pirates as they take on No. 9 seed Butler in the first round of the Big East Tournament. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.
