On Aug. 25, before the first day of classes, the Green trans- formed into a colorful carnival as the Student Activities Board (SAB) held its annual Blue Day Carnival following the freshman convocation.
The planning of the event started long before the day of the carnival. Trevor Gorman, a junior economics and finance major and a member of SAB, said the planning for the event started two weeks into the summer.
Gorman said SAB decided on the “SHUcation” theme to “cre- ate the illusion of an island vaca- tion, so that the students could have one last taste of summer.”
He explained that to create this atmosphere, SAB hired vendor Al Belmont’s company, Wizard’s Festival of Fun Inc., who they have used often for SAB events in the past. Belmont provided the rides and supplies, which Gorman said helped SAB cultivate the carnival’s aesthetic.
Other members of SAB honed in on the importance of having Blue Day every year. “Blue Day brings the campus together before school starts,” Troy Burgess, a sophomore marketing major and member of SAB, said. “It allows those who weren’t able to go home during break to experience summer vacation."
On the day of the carnival, the Green was filled with obstacle courses, bouncy houses, a waterslide, food trucks, a mechanical shark and several other activities. Tyasia Harris, a junior psychology major who attended the event, said prior to arriving to the carnival she saw snapshots of how enjoyable it was. After at- tending the carnival, she said she first started off at the food trucks and was impressed with the selection of food.
Harris said that SAB outdid themselves this year and that she looks forward to what they have in store for next year.
