The Sophomore Center opened this semester as a resource for second year students who find themselves looking for the kind of guidance they received freshman year.
Robin Cunningham, associate dean of freshman studies, acted as director of the Sophomore Center while it was forming. She said the program was started because “we wanted to provide sophomores with similar resources and services to recognize their success in managing their first year academically, personally and financially and to help them begin their second year knowing their resources.”
Megan Hall is the current director of the Sophomore Center, which is located in Room 14 in Mooney Hall. The best way for students to stay up to date, Hall said, “is to opt-in to weekly text message updates for upcoming events on campus. All they need to do is text SOPH to 55000.”
Another way for students to stay connected is by emailing the Sophomore Center at sophomore center@shu.edu and ask any questions they might have regarding a variety of subjects ranging from scholarships to study abroad. The Sophomore Center also has a Seton Hall 2017 Facebook page and twitter @SophCenterSHU for students to stay connected.
Dr. Tracy H. Gottlieb, vice president of student services and creator of the Sophomore Center, said one of her main goals is to make the sophomore class feel more like a community.
She said, “We are sponsoring workshops that will provide important information to sophomores about study abroad, study skills and careers. We will also be sponsoring activities designed to bring sophomores together as a class.”
The Center has already started holding events. On Wednesday Sept. 10, it sponsored a Sophomore Fair on the University Green with popcorn and snow cones, a photo booth and entertainers. After the fair, they put on their first workshop with ARC called “Get Organized!”
Future events include a KanJam tournament on the University Green from 1 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 8. Dean Cunningham said, “We intend that students leave the Sophomore Center knowing they have a place to come with any questions or concerns they have about the next step to their success.”
