If you are a fan of WSOU, you may have heard the name "Type A" or DJ Angie Szani, who now is the winner of The International Radio Festival (IRF) 2012 "Best US College DJ."
As her prize, Szani will be traveling to Cannes, France in Jan. 2013 to attend the longest running global music event: Midem, according to a press release sent out by MJ Global Communications.
SHU senior Szani, a regular rotation DJ and a specialty show host for the Campus Buzz at WSOU said she is grateful for winning this award.
"The award is a great title and accomplishment for WSOU," Szani said. "I'm very excited and thankful that I am able to go to France and be around more music at the Midem festival."
According to MJ Global Communications, there were over 50 applicants from nearly 30 Universities who entered to win the title "Best US College DJ." Applicants had to upload a half hour music show to demonstrate their skills via mixcloud.com.
"Applying was simple," Szani said. "Cut 30 minute segments of music and live DJing, and tag submissions with IRF Search. All recordings were uploaded to mixcloud's website.
Szani said she heard about the contest through another WSOU DJ, Andrew Marshello while they were at a CMJ Music Marathon conference.
"Some contest representative was announcing it throughout the CMJ conference," Szani said.
According to Szani, the award seems to be making a good impact for WSOU.
"I do notice more views on our blog and the mixcloud account," Szani said. "Hopefully it helps get us into more shows."
Although a psychology major, Szani said she is very interested in staying in the music business when she graduates, since she has been a DJ for WSOU since her freshman year.
"I love music, college radio and anything to do with broadcasting," Szani said. "I have other passions too, but I intend to keep radio in my schedule one way or another."
Szani said she plans on attending graduate school at some point, but most likely not for the first year after graduation, when she wants to look for work in various fields to support herself.
"Afterwards, whether I'm in psychology or music, I will be furthering my education," Szani said. "One thing I am certain about: I definitely will be going to shows."
