Former Seton Hall guard Sterling Gibbs made the announcement on Saturday via Twitter that he will be transferring to the University of Connecticut for the 2015-2016 season.
“It’s a great opportunity to be able to come into a veteran team with a great coach and have the chance to make an impact,” Gibbs told Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv. The tradition of UConn and their guards speaks for itself.”
Named the No. 1 transfer on the market by ESPN and immediately eligible to play, Gibbs had his choice among schools. He received interest from Pittsburgh, Ohio State, North Carolina State, Baylor, Temple and Virginia Commonwealth before settling on UConn.
Gibbs will take the place of recent graduate guard Ryan Boatright as well as Terrence Samuel, who is transferring out of the Huskies’ program. The ex-Pirate will also play alongside returning guards Rodney Purvis and Daniel Hamilton as well as incoming shooting guard Jalen Adams.
Being at UConn lets Gibbs stay in the northeast while also providing him the chance to be a featured player in head coach Kevin Ollie’s lineup. It also gives him a chance to win.
When asked why his son picked UConn, Temple Gibbs told Jerry Carino of the Asbury Park Press that Sterling wanted to play for a contender.
“He wanted to be a part of a team that could get to the NCAA tournament,” he said. “Those guys can get there.”
A postgraduate player, Gibbs will walk in Seton Hall’s Commencement Ceremony on May 18. He plans to enroll at summer school at UConn, according to David Borges of the New Haven Register.
