Seton Hall sweeps DePaul in three-game series

Seton Hall softball flew to Chicago this past weekend to sweep DePaul in a three-game series, winning by a combined total of 31-16.

In the first game, it only took two innings for the Pirates to get on the board. Hits from Olivia Gilbert, Lela Allan and Andrea Perez put the Pirates up 3-0. Seton Hall didn’t look back and held on to win 9-1.

Perez finished with two hits, resulting in two RBIs, and scored a run. Ashly Colonnetta also recorded a hit, two RBIs and a run. Kelsey Carr pitched for the Pirates, her only run she gave up being a solo home run off the bat of Anna Wohlers in the third. Carr tossed all six innings, giving up seven hits and recording seven strikeouts in the win.

The second game was much of the same for the Pirates. Shelby Smith was the starting pitcher. During the game, she gave up four runs on 11 hits and had four strikeouts. Before Smith even stepped foot in the circle, she kicked off the scoring for the Pirates by hitting a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. Seton Hall didn’t score again until the sixth when Allen doubled, scoring two runs. The Hall tacked on four more in the seventh and won 9-4.

The final game of the series presented more of an issue in the field for the Pirates as they had two errors and two runs given up in four different innings. A seven-run second inning helped The Hall’s cause.

In the last game, Carr had seven RBIs, including a bases-clearing double and a second-inning grand slam. She also came in to relieve starting pitcher Sydney Babik and gave up the least amount of earned runs of the three Seton Hall players to pitch. The Pirates weathered DePaul’s 11-run storm and went on to win 13-11.

The series sweep of DePaul improved the Pirates' record to 29-12 on the year. The team travels to Providence, Rhode Island for their next Big East matchup against Providence.
