The women's basketball team lost to Providence, 58-55, on Sunday at Walsh Gymnasium.
The Friars improved to 3-6 in Big East play, with an overall record of 10-11, while Seton Hall fell to 7-15 overall, remaining winless in conference play with a 0-9 record.
Despite losing, the Pirates won the turnover battle, only recording 13 compared to 18 by Providence. The Pirates also out-rebounded the Friars 34-30.
Junior guard Jasmine Crew led the Pirates with 14 points. She also recorded five rebounds in 37 minutes of play.
Junior forward Kandice Green had 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Friars sophomore guard Symone Roberts led the Friars with 14 points, matching Crew's total for the game-high. Roberts iced the game with two made free throws after being fouled by sophomore guard Brittany Morris with three seconds remaining.
The Pirates shot 35 percent from the floor and 11.1 percent from behind the arc.
The first half was a defensive struggle, with the score being 17-16.
Both teams picked up the offensive pace in the second half, with the Friars scoring 41 points and the Pirates scoring 39.
"I think it's great for the team to score almost 40 points in a half, and in the first half we played great defense," head coach Anne Donovan said. "We just have to put the two halves together to win."
The game was close throughout, with each team's biggest lead being four points. The score was tied 13 times and there were 18 lead changes.
Both teams made a combined seven consecutive baskets late in the second half to bring the deciding factor down to the finals seconds of the game.
"This one hurt," Donovan said.
The Pirates return to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to take on No. 8 Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
