The Seton Hall baseball team completed a three-game sweep of the Manhattan Jaspers with a doubleheader on Saturday.
The Pirates won the second game after being down two runs going into the bottom of the seventh. Senior Brett Fontenelli tied the game after bringing in two runs off a single in the seventh. Sophomore Mike Alescio brought in the game-winning run off a single to complete the rally in the eighth.
Chris Morris got the start for the Blue and White, going five innings. The sophomore gave up two early runs in the first two innings, but settled in for the next three. Relievers Zach Schellenger and Anthony Pacillo came in for the Pirates and surrendered zero runs and only three hits in four innings.
The Pirates had seven combined hits. Senior Derek Jenkins had two hits in four at-bats. Junior Matt Fortin also had two hits in three at-bats.
The starter for Manhattan was junior Joe Jacques, who went nearly seven innings before giving up two runs. Junior Shawn Kanwisher came in and gave up the game-winning run.
The Jaspers jumped on the Pirates early, scoring a run in each of the first two innings. Freshman Fabian Pena scored the first run of the game on an RBI single. Junior Jose Carrera added another run of a single to out his team up two. Manhattan had nine total hits including Adam Genners and Richie Barrella who chipped in two hits apiece.
The Pirates shut out Manhattan, 5-0, in the first game led by the pitching of freshman Cullen Dana and sophomore Matt Leon. Dana started the game and went five innings while giving up only three hits and striking out five to earn the win. Leon finished off the next four innings, striking out four and not giving up a hit.
Senior Zack Weigel had two hits in three at-bats and also scoring two runs. Four Pirates had an RBI, including junior Mike Caputo, who also had three hits in four at-bats. The Blue and White scored two runs in the fourth inning and then tacked on another three runs in the 8th.
The starter for Manhattan was junior Joey Rocchietti, who lasted seven innings while giving up one run on eight hits. Rocchietti had five strikeouts and only two walks. Relievers Ryan Takacs and Michael Scarinci pitched two combined innings and gave up three runs.
The Jaspers couldn’t get an offense going as the team only had three combined hits. Two of those hits came from sophomore Michael Pfenninger in three at-bats.
Seton Hall is now 13-6 and has won nine straight games. The next game for the Pirates is home against Saint Peter’s on Wednesday, March 23 at 4 p.m.
