Men’s Soccer fall to St John’s in first Carroll Field loss, 1-0

The Pirates hosted the Red Storm at Owen T. Carroll Field on Wednesday, Oct. 23, for their sixth Big East contest of the year. Despite strong efforts from the Pirate offense, St. John’s claimed victory against Seton Hall on their home soil.

From the opening minutes on the pitch, the Pirates and the Red Storm played a physical game, with three fouls recorded within the first five minutes of play. St John’s offensive efforts culminated in the ninth minute, with a shot from Eric Danquah that was rejected by keeper Soren Jensen.

The Pirates responded at 23 minutes with a shot on goal from senior Tim Ströbeck, which was sent off course by St John’s keeper Alex McLachlan. The Red Storm would go on to score the lone goal of the contest with a penalty kick from Martin Kozak awarded in the 25th minute. Despite the Pirates’ best offensive efforts, they were held scoreless at the half.

The Pirates’ second-half offense kicked off with a shot from Til Kauschke, which was saved by McLachlan. St. John’s responded at 62 minutes with a shot from Jackson Gould just shy of the left goalpost. The Pirates’ offense went on to outshoot the Red Storm 4-1 in the half, with two shots from junior Nico Rubio, and a final attempt from Stan De Vries a minute before time expired. Despite this, the Pirates failed to kiss the back netting and left Carroll Field with a 1-0 loss against St. John’s.

The Pirates’ current record stands at 10-5-1, with a record of 3-3-1 in the Big East. The Hall looks to climb over the .500 mark in the Big East competition when they face the Villanova Wildcats on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. This will be their final regular game of the season, and the team has already secured a playoff spot.
