The tweets came after a fire alarm was pulled in Boland Hall at 2 p.m. on Tuesday because of the smell of gasoline coming from the machines. Some students initially thought it was a fire drill.
Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life Albert Cardona said fire drills are conducted two times a semester for residence hall. He said the dates are set by Housing and Residence Life, Security and the South Orange Fire Department.
Cardona said drills can and have been canceled before.
"Typically drills are canceled because SOFD has to respond to an emergency call or due to inclement weather that may jeopardize the safety of our students," he said. "We have rescheduled drills in the past due to snow, but that is by a case-by-case basis and is also dependent on whether SOFD are able to be on campus to conduct the drill."
He said during bad weather, Security creates a place in alternate buildings for residents to go to ensure safety.
"The SOFD prefers that we alter our drill times (morning and evenings) to ensure that students don't come accustomed to hearing drills at a particular hour," he said.
