The Seton Hall volleyball team finished the Seton Hall Classic with a three-set sweep over Temple on Saturday night. The win over the Owls culminated the tournament held between Seton Hall, Temple, Hofstra and Notre Dame.
“It’s exactly what we needed,” head coach Allison Yaeger said in reference to coming out of the tournament on top. “It’s a huge confidence booster for our girls, especially how young we are. Our freshmen are still just learning the ropes and the speed of the college game, so to do something like this against really good teams is really a confidence booster for everybody.”
Among the Pirates’ struggles early in the first match were digging as well as service and attack errors. After capitalizing on more attempts to keep the ball, they came out on top in the first set and won 25-23.
The second set showed similarities to the first, but the difference in this set was the team getting a handle on their blocking. They finished with a total of eight team blocks, and won the set 25-22.
Once the third set began, it was all Seton Hall. With the help of kills from Amanda Hansen, Cherise Hennigan, Abby Thelen and Grace Forren the Pirates were able to make it a quick 25-15 game.
It was a big game for the freshmen on the team, as Thelen finished with 10 kills on just 14 attempts while setter Sophia Coffey finished with an impressive 45 assists.
Hansen also had a big night, as she finished with 12 total kills on 22 attempts.
“Once we started focusing on the middle and forcing her she did great,” Yaeger said of Hansen. “It’s huge for us when she gets going like that.”
All games this weekend were held in Walsh Gym and brought in large numbers of Pirate fans.
“There is nothing like being in our home gym with that crowd,” Yaeger said. “That crowd was the reason why we played so well. They make a huge difference for us.”
The Pirates will head off to Louisville next weekend for the Louisville Invitational. Their first match of the tournament is set for Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Ohio.
