SHU Theatre presents a new Instagram segment, “Tech Tuesdays”

Seton Hall Theatre launched a new segment on their Instagram called “Tech Tuesdays” to give students a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes of the theater’s shop hours in the University Center.

Emma Morris, a junior visual and sound media major and the theater’s production manager said the purpose of the segment is to showcase the inner workings of the theater.

“We want to highlight the crew and make people interested and excited about Seton Hall Theatre,” Morris said. “I think people may be intimidated by the work, and we just want to show them that it’s not that hard. We are more than happy to teach you.”

She said her love for backstage is something she hopes to pass along to more people.

“There’s something so magical about watching everything from backstage and witnessing the audience’s reactions to something you put so much work into,” Morris said. “It’s a really rewarding feeling.”

Kyus Wright, a senior theater major and the SHU Theatre Council’s president said he finds working behind the scenes to be really enjoyable.

“It’s really fun,” Wright said. “Throughout my time here I’ve worked on lighting, sound, and stage crew; there’s many different ways to get involved.”

He said working behind the scenes helped him build a deep appreciation for all the hard work the stage crew does.

“Before Seton Hall Theatre, I used to look at acting as just memorizing and reciting a bunch of lines,” Wright said. “But after working backstage, I now understand just how much is put into the production of the show. Also knowing why things are done in a specific way has helped me as a performer.”

Both executive board members Wright and Billy Agustin, the public relations chair, said they are most proud of the community in the theater.

Agustin, a senior political science and classical studies major, came up with the idea of the “Tech Tuesdays” segment. She said she hopes that it brings students from all different majors and backgrounds to the theater.

“I want people to know that there’s a lot of different ways to get involved here,” Agustin said. “No matter what you’re interested in, there's something here for you. You could learn a new skill or even get back into an old hobby along the way.”

“Tech Tuesdays” provides another door to involvement in SHU Theatre, and a chance to be involved in “such an inclusive and inviting atmosphere,” Morris said. She said  the theater is “truly a place for anyone.”

SHU Theatre’s new series is available on their Instagram @shu_theatre, which so far consists of two episodes: “Speed Tour” and “Backstage Projects.”

According to Morris, students are welcome to attend SHU Theatre’s meeting on Oct. 7 and its shop hours every Friday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
