Students who are interested in Korean culture and entertainment can join a new club called K-Pop that has come to campus.
The club meets to discuss and enjoy Korean culture, especially the food, music, language and dance of the country.
“There are people who are from different cultures and they come together and talk a lot. We become a family, which is what makes this club unique,” said Anupa Aksahongsahus, a sophomore who is president of K-Pop.
According to Aksahongsahus, the organization got started when the current executive board members approached her at the library.
They noticed her browsing on the internet about Korean music and then started a conversation about it. The group then coordinated with the Student Government Association last year for K-Pop to be a legitimate and functioning club on campus.
The e-board members include vice president Alexandra Ebol, secretary Anna Dominique Miranda and treasurer Karen Nepomuceno. Webmaster Jonathan Roan and the dance instructor, Angelie Tolentino, also help the organization run successfully. The members meet to discuss event ideas and to find constructive ways to increase participation.
The executive board members plan to raise funds next semester. The club tries to get more recognized by students and other Seton Hall organizations through their involvement on campus.
About 60 students have joined K-Pop, but only half of them are active members who attend most meetings. About 10 to 20 club members are involved in dance practices where they dance to Korean music. They performed at the Martin Luther King Scholarship Association event on Nov. 4. Additionally, they will coordinate with the International Student Association to perform at their event on Friday, Nov. 21.
“It’s great that we could create a place for people who have an interest in K-Pop to come together and just have fun,” Aksahongsahus said. “I do want more people to join, but it’s a good start because we just started the club this year.”
The club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in Mooney Hall.
