SGA presses for lower ID fees

The Student Government Association is lobbying against the decision to raise fees for replacement IDs.

The senators wrote a letter to the Campus ID office expressing their disappointment with the increased fees. The initiative is headed by Senator Joseph Donato and Parliamentarian Annelie Roding.

Donato said he hopes the Campus ID office does not disregard the letter and that they will set up a meeting with the Senate so that the Senate can get the fees repealed by next school year.

If they do not respond, Donato said the Senate will meet and decide on a plan to put pressure on the Campus ID office.

According to Donato, no student intentionally loses his or her ID and it is an injustice to make students pay $35 for a new one.

According to Jeffrey Hurrin, assistant vice president for Student Affairs, prior to this semester, temporary IDs were $5, while replacement ID cards were $20.

"Many students on this campus struggle to pay their tuition, purchase their books and feed themselves," Donato said.

He said the University should not be using the ID prices as a source of revenue.

In other business, Chief of Staff Grant McIntire reported that the take-out box program with Gourmet Dining Services has been reinstated.

GDS will advertise the program by putting a banner up in the cafeteria.

There is a link on the SGA blog where students can go to order meals from GDS, according to McIntire. Students will have to order the boxes 24 hours in advance then pick them up from the caf.
