“Hook News Minute”: A look inside SHU TV's new Instagram series

Seton Hall’s TV station, mostly known as SHU TV, started a news segment this semester called “Hook News Minute” to change how students receive and think about news.

“Hook News Minute” delivers news in under a minute with quick headlines and an upbeat cadence.

The “Hooks News Minute” is posted to their Instagram @shu_.tv every Friday. In this series, SHU TV covers topics, such as weather, celebrities, university events, politics, etc.

Farnsworth Hendrickson Jr., a senior visual and sound media major, created the project. Hendrickson said he wants to get more students engaged with SHU TV, so he had the idea to use social media.

“I had previously seen many people create short stories on their phones,” Hendrickson said, “and I wanted to do the same for Seton Hall.”

The goal of this segment is to give Seton Hall students an easy way to access important news from around the world.

“It is critical to have this media foundation,” Hendrickson said. “It will supply consumers with brief and simple content, allowing them to decide whether or not to investigate further.”

The SHU TV “Hook News Minute” segment gives students access to important news without the barriers of paywalls or cable plans.

Hendrickson said he had help from the graphics and field producer, Jorge Rivera, and creative and assistant social media director, Eugenio “Gino” Granato.

Granato, a junior visual and sound media major, said that he and Farnsworth “are both creative people [who] love to use social media.”

“When we found a way to make something small and post it, we got excited and decided to use our platform to inform people about what’s happening in the world,” Granato said.

He also said he believes this series can greatly impact the Seton Hall campus.

“‘Hook News Minute’ is a neutral platform that welcomes all students with different opinions,” Granato said. “I hope it also inspires other students who like to be creative to create something similar and see that they could generate any segment and post it.”

Khari Greene, a senior visual and sound media major and producer for the creative department, said the goal of SHU TV is to “provide Seton Hall with film and television style content of all kinds to directly engage with and connect to the student body as both a source of entertainment and voice for students.”

Greene said this series falls in line with the greater goals of SHU TV, and he still believes there are things that can happen to help the organization’s growth.

“We need to gain more support from more faculty that can help us set up events and gain more exposure for the student body to know what SHU TV is,” Greene said.
