The Seton Hall baseball team fell to the Creighton Bluejays on Sunday at Owen T. Carroll Field by a score of 4-2.
The Pirates are now 21-20 on the season and 6-6 in Big East play. This was the third and final game in the series in which the two teams split the first two games. In Game 1 on Friday, Seton Hall was able to pull out a 5-4 victory but fell on Saturday, 10-7, after a late rally came up short.
In Game 3, Creighton jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and the Pirates were just unable to recover. Seton Hall recorded just three hits in Sunday’s contest. The Bluejays scored on an error in the third inning, an RBI double and sacrifice fly in the fourth, and an RBI double in the fifth.
For Seton Hall, a hit did not come until the bottom of the fifth inning, when catcher Tyler Boyd hit a triple into right-center field. From there, the designated hitter, Alex Falconi, drove in Boyd on a groundout to bring the score to 4-1.
On the mound for the Pirates was senior left-hander Anthony Elia. Elia pitched five innings and gave up six hits and four runs, three earned, in the effort. The Pirates also recorded two errors on the day.
A bright spot in the game for Seton Hall was shortstop Joe Poduslenko. The sophomore had a single with two outs in the fifth inning and was also able to make his way around the diamond in the eighth inning.
After a walk to lead off, he stole second base and then reached third on a sacrifice fly. Poduslenko scored again on an RBI sacrifice fly by Ryan Ramiz to make the score 4-2.
In the ninth, the Pirates were unable to record a hit, going 1-2-3 at the hands of freshman Ethan Decaster, who recorded the save for Creighton. Junior Matt Warren got the win. He pitched seven innings, gave up three hits and an earned run, and struck out three.
Sophomore Joe DiBenedetto pitched four scoreless innings of relief for Seton Hall, allowing no hits and just one baserunner on a walk. The left-hander also struck out five batters.
The Pirates, who are in third place in the Big East, travel to Villanova on Friday for a three-game series before their final home series against Georgetown on May 14.
