Seton Hall's run of 13 consecutive victories came to an end Thursday as the Pirates fell 4-3 to the St. John's Red Storm. The loss is the Hall's first in Big East play with senior Jon Prosinski starting and ends their chances at winning a share of the Big East regular season title.
All game the Pirates had a chance to pile up the runs but was unable to come up with the big hit, stranding 15 runners on base including the tying run in scoring position in the ninth.
Prosinski gave up three runs in the first inning on four hits, three of which were doubles. In their half of the first, the Pirates came back with junior Zack Granite leading off with a single and scoring on a throwing error from second on a Mike Genovese grounder.
After the first inning the Pirates would only allow two St. John's hits the rest of the game but the Red Storm pushed across a run in the fourth inning. Danny Bethea led-off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice, but a grounder through the legs of Genovese allowed Bethea to score the winning run.
Seton Hall started to chip away at the three run deficit in the seventh inning with senior Giuseppe Papaccio reaching base on a lead-off walk and scoring on a Scott Kalamar single to the shortstop whose throw was unable to be scooped up by the St. John first baseman.
One inning later Ryan Sullivan scored on a Granite single to left after a lead-off walk of his own. However, in each of the last two innings the Pirates would leave runners on first and second.
In the start Prosinski went 7.1 innings allowing six hits and four runs, three earned, while recording four strikeouts. The four strikeouts give Prosinski 255 in his Seton Hall career, one shy of tying Jason Grilli's school record 256 career K's.
