A group of students from the Stillman School of Business will be competing against other universities in the CFA Institute Research Challenge on Monday, March 4.
Team Stillman will take on teams from Fordham University, Montclair State University and Pace University.
The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an educational project which leading industry professionals teach business and finance students how to research and report on a publicly-traded company. The Challenge will be hosted by the New York Society of Security Analysts, according to team members.
Team Stillman consists of Lindsey Puliti, senior Thomas Mazzeo and graduate students Jason Marshall and Rachel Rasmussen.
Members said Team Stillman has been given the computer company Microsoft. They have to write a 10 page analyst report with a buy, sell or hold recommendation. Afterwards they will prepare for a 10 minute presentation and then after that, prepare for 10 minutes of questions.
They said it also needs to have every little detail memorized, such as growth rates and units sold of a product.
"You really learn how to analyze a company and even more importantly you learn how to defend a thesis you created yourself," Mazzeo said.
Members said the team officially started working at the end of October 2012.
"We are just trying to make sure that our presentation is the best it can be," Marshall said.
According to Mazzeo, the team has passed the first round and is moving on to the next level.
"It feels a bit the same just with a larger audience," Mazzeo said.
Rasmussen said that the team is excited for the competition.
"We have a great team this year, and we all look forward to Monday's competition and results," she said.
