After a disappointing 12th place finish at the Navy Classic in early September, the men's golf team finished ninth out of 15 teams at the Rutgers Invitational.
In their second tournament of the season the Pirates finished with a three round score of 48-over-pard 900.
This inexperienced Pirates team consists of 3 starters that are sophomores or younger. In both tournaments this year the Pirates have been led by sophomore standout Derrick Kim. This past weekend Kim finished 10-over-par and T-16 individually.
According to Coach Clay White, Kim is not the only leader on the team. Junior Gary Dunne, one of the more seasoned veterans, has been able to lead the team, especially with his play.
Dunne also finished 10-over for the tournament. Although they may be young, White likes what he has been seeing from freshmen David Cha and Corey Wilson. Cha and Wilson both started off the tournament with disappointing first rounds, but it was clear they would not go away without a fight because they both battled back to put up scores in the mid-70s in the second and third rounds.
According to White, "Cha and Wilson haven't had their best rounds yet."
"You have to stay mentally strong," White said. "It is the same game, just a new environment."
To some, the Pirates look like a team that is struggling, but to White they're just doing their best to improve each and every day.
The Pirates return to the course on Monday for the Hartford Hawks Invitational in South Kent, Conn.
