Alpha Phi Sorority will kick off Seton Hall's Greek Week with a 5k walk/run to benefit women's heart health on the University Green this Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
The event, Move Your Phi't, is held annually across the country by many of the sorority's chapters to support the Alpha Phi Foundation. This will be the first time Seton Hall's Eta Eta chapter is hosting the run.
"Heart health problems are the leading killer of women in the United States, so it's important that we raise awareness," organizer of the event and junior McKenna Ronquillo said.
Stepping off at noon, runners will circle the Green 15 times. There will be a DJ to entertain participants as well as posters along the course to inform them about heart disease.
The first female finisher will win a membership to Ladies Workout Express on South Orange Avenue, while the first male finisher will receive a gift card to Stony's Restaurant, Ronquillo said.
The event is expected to raise around $500, some of which will come from sisters in the sorority, according to Ronquillo.
"Last year we raised $12,500 through all of our programs," she said. "We're hoping to beat that this year, and this should help us do that."
Though all members of the University community are urged to attend, the run is being tailored to members of Greek Life, as it is the official start of this year's Greek Week, according to Ronquillo.
The run will be followed by a Greek Life barbecue on the Green at 1 p.m.
Should the Green be unavailable due to inclement weather, the run will be held in the Fieldhouse and will consist of 24 laps around the indoor track.
"Obviously we want to have it happen on the Green," Ronquillo said. "But we'll work with what we get."
Tickets for the event are $5 and can be purchased through the event's Eventbrite page.
