The Seton Hall Pirates couldn’t pull off the upset, as they went down in three sets to the 6th-ranked Creighton Blue Jays on Saturday, Oct. 26.
The Pirates were looking to bounce back after losing their last two to Butler and Marquette. The Blue Jays, on the other hand, won their last 11 games since losing to #4 Louisville on Sept. 15.
The first half of the opening set saw competitive play from both sides. Seton Hall even got within one point, and it was looking like they could be the second Big East foe to take a set from the Blue Jays this season. That was until Creighton scored 12 of the next 13 points, including four kills by junior Ava Martin during that stretch, to take the set 25-14.
The second set was eerily similar to the first: the Hall played competitively towards the beginning of the set and even got to within one, but then Creighton went on a huge run. This time, it was eight in a row, to put the set out of reach. Creighton went up 20-12, effectively ending any chances of the Pirates tying or taking the lead, as the Blue Jays took the second set by a score of 25-13.
Creighton came out firing on all cylinders in the third set, winning the first seven points before Seton Hall coach Shannon Thompson called a timeout. She didn’t call her second timeout, as the Pirates never got within five points after. Creighton took the third and final frame by a score of 25-11.
Creighton showed why they rank third in the nation in hitting percentage, with a .311 hitting percentage throughout the game, and a .417 kill percentage. Martin led the way with 12 kills, followed by senior Norah Sis with eight. Seton Hall was led by sophomore Senna Roberts-Navarro with seven kills, followed by grad student Perri Lucas with six.
Seton Hall is currently 9th in the Big East with a conference record of 2-9 and an overall record of 8-14. Their next matchup is a home game against the Connecticut Huskies on Friday, Nov. 8 at 5:00 p.m.
