The College of Communication and the Arts is hosting a third installment of its sports media roundtable speaker series, “The Book on Storytelling, Writing, and Publishing” on Dec. 6. The panel is to be moderated by Seton Hall University’s Professional-in-Residence in the College of Communication and the Arts, B.J. Schecter.

The upcoming roundtable’s panelists will be New York Times bestselling author Jeff Benedict and a Sports Illustrated senior writer Ben Reiter, who will both be discussing their careers and passing on their experiences developing nonfiction pieces, in an open panel format.
Benedict and Reiter both expressed their excitement for the panel.
“It’s a great opportunity for students to hear from and ask questions of two writers and an editor who have worked on and continue to work on longform journalism,” Benedict said via email. Benedict also said he hopes to discuss his process for creating the narrative for his Tiger Woods’s biography Tiger Woods.
“I’m excited to talk about the reporting process that I bring to all of my stories, and how I believe that the best sports stories aim to have a significance that extends far beyond the field, the court, or the ice,” Reiter said via email.
The “The Book on Storytelling, Writing, and Publishing” panel will serve as a homecoming for Reiter, as he grew up in South Orange and graduated from High School in Maplewood in 1998. Reiter said that he cannot wait to meet Seton Hall’s students saying, “I’ll give them an inside account at the very unlikely string of events - including an SI [Sports Illustrated] cover prediction that was at the time considered laughable - that resulted in my book Astroball.”
Students when asked about the panel expressed great interest with Michael Pardal, a junior journalism major, saying, “I’m interested in going. I’m looking forward to learning how they got into the business and any advice to young students.”
Benedict said he is currently at work on a biography of LeBron James and Reiter is promoting his first published book Astroball, about the Houston Astro’s win of the 2017 World Series. “The story of the innovative way that a group of outsiders combined modern analytics with old-fashioned methods of acquiring information to find success,” said Reiter of his book.
The “The Book on Storytelling, Writing, and Publishing” panel will be on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018 at 7 p.m. in Arts and Sciences Hall, Room 107.
