Sophomore pitcher Shane McCarthy led the Seton Hall baseball team to its first shutout win over the Manhattan Jaspers, 2-0, pushing the team’s winning streak to seven straight games on Friday.
McCarthy’s talent continues to be on full display, as he allowed a mere two hits while notching a career-high 11 strikeouts. His masterful effort was further shown in surrendering zero walks, as well, in pacing the Hall to a win.
Seton Hall’s hitting efforts were led junior Mike Caputo and senior Zach Weigel, as both Pirates earned two hits and each scored a run of their own. Weigel earned a triple during the fourth inning, which was the 11th of his career, tying him for sixth all-time in Seton Hall history.
Caputo’s run came in the third earning when senior Chris Chiaradio used a sacrifice bunt to advance Caputo to second. With two outs on the board, senior Derek Jenkins snuck a single up the middle to get Caputo home.
The Hall’s second run came in the sixth inning when a hit from Caputo got Weigel home to wrap up the game’s scoring.
Following this victory, the Hall rises to 11-6, and continues a hot streak that has seen the Pirates win nine of their last 10. McCarthy evens out his own record at 2-2.
Expect big things from McCarthy going forward, as he has capitalized on the Hall’s hot streak to earn his second full-game shutout, not to mention a combined 21 strikeouts in his last two starts.
The Pirates will face Manhattan again on Saturday, March 19 in a double-header with Game 1 scheduled to get started at noon.
