Seton Hall moved to 10-2 on Tuesday night, wrapping up non-conference play in Newark with a 66-49 win over the University of South Florida.
SHU hit the floor running, starting the game off with 14-0 run before the Bulls finally scored at the 9:56 mark in the first half. It was smooth sailing from there for the Pirates, who were never threatened by USF.
With Christmas right around the corner, Isaiah Whitehead appeared to be in a giving mood. The sophomore focused his efforts on passing rather than scoring, finishing the night with 10 assists and six points. As a unit the Pirates tallied 21 assists on 26 field goals.
“We’ve been sharing the ball great,” head coach Kevin Willard said. “The biggest thing was making sure we got shots; not turning the basketball over. This is where I think we should be.”
Veer Singh benefited tremendously from all of the ball movement, finishing the night with a career-high 12 points. The rookie hit four of six shots from deep, adding two rebounds and two assists along the way.
“I’m still at about 80 percent,” Singh said, referring to a lingering wrist injury. “It is a matter of when, not if. That’s what they need me from in Big East play.”
“It’s good to see him kind of get in a little bit of a rhythm,” Willard said of the sharpshooter. “He gives us a nice weapon off the bench.”
Angel Delgado had another big night as well, recording his fifth double-double in as many outings. No. 31 grabbed 11 off the glass in addition to his 14 points on 7-11 shooting.
Overall, it was a night USF would soon like to forget. South Florida shot just 34 percent from the field, turning the ball over 15 times in the contest. Forward Angel Nunez led the lackluster charge for the Bulls, scoring 19 points to go with eight rebounds.
For Seton Hall, it was the end to another successful non-conference schedule. At 10-2 the Pirates find themselves in the exact same position they were in prior to Big East play last year. Better yet, everyone is healthy, something that has been atypical of Willard’s rosters.
“If I get to the 30th and all five starters are (healthy), I’ll be ecstatic,” the coach joked before knocking on the wooden podium in front of him. “This will be the first time in five years we’ll go into Big East play without a starter hurt – hopefully.”
The Blue and White will get league play going on Dec. 30 when they visit Marquette. The action will begin at 7 p.m.
