“A Day in the Life of a Girl”, an event exploring young women’s rights internationally, the crimes against these rights, and how to prevent such crimes from occurring will be held on Tuesday Nov. 3 in the Main Lounge.
Sponsored by nine organizations including Seton Hall’s United Nations Association, SAVE (Sexual Assault and Violence Education), Gender Equality Now, Black Student Union, UNA-USA, Amnesty International, MSU, ONE campus, and GirlUP of the United Nations Foundation, the event will feature interactive tabling starting at 3 p.m. and a panel from 5 to 6 p.m.
A co-chair of the event, Cynthia Sularz, who is a senior diplomacy, international relations, and modern languages major, said that this event will be the first “largescale panel on the rights of adolescent girls” ever held at Seton Hall.
Sularz said the event will educate the SHU community “about the legal and social discrimination of girls internationally, and the different channels to combat it.”
SAVE has held several events in the past to raise awareness on the serious issue of sexual assault on college campuses. As many as one in five women are sexually assaulted while in college, according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.
“SAVE will speak on how sexual assault prevention is essential to the college environment,” Sularz said. “Our panelists will speak more broadly about girls’ rights internationally and acts of gender-based violence, like female genital mutilation and child marriage.”
Each sponsoring organization will have a table set up featuring different girls’ rights that attendees will be able to see during the interactive sessions. “A Day in the Life of a Girl” will also include informational and interactive games and data maps, adds Sularz.
Panel speakers include SHU professors Nabeela Alam, King Mott, Judith Stark, and Melissa May.
“A Day in the Life of a Girl’ will also feature guest speaker Julie Willig of the grassroots organization, GirlUP of the United Nations Foundations.
