The Seton Hall women’s soccer team played its final non-conference road game Monday, which resulted in a 0-0 draw against the Monmouth Hawks at Hesse Field in West Long Branch, N.J.
Prior to the game, former Monmouth star and captain of the United States Women’s national team Christie Rampone was honored. Team USA was victorious in the 2015 Women’s World Cup and brought home the gold.
It was only appropriate that the night Rampone, who is a defender for both the United States national team and Sky Blue FC, was honored that such a defensive ensued. Rampone played under current Pirates head coach Rick Stainton during his tenure as head coach of Sky Blue FC.
The Pirates’ record now stands at 0-4-2. It was an inspired effort led by freshman goal keeper Anna MacLean. MacLean recorded six saves in the draw, including two after the end of regulation.
Defense has certainly been the calling card of the Seton Hall teams since Stainton took over head coaching duties. Monday’s shutout was the seventh in 24 matches under Stainton. It was the first shutout for MacLean.
Monmouth had multiple opportunities to put a shot in goal, including a span of 17 seconds where three shots were fired in the 65th minute.
The Pirates made an effort to come away with a victory in the 78th minute when freshman Tanika Roach fired a potential game-winner that was turned away by Hawks’ goal keeper Sydney Lavan.
Seton Hall and Monmouth, who both call the Garden State home, have built a familiarity between their women’s soccer programs. The teams have played 21 times since 1994 with the Pirates holding a 12-5-4 advantage.
The Pirates will be seeking their first win of the young season as they play the first of three consecutive home games. The Hall will be welcoming St. Joseph’s University on Friday, Sept. 11 at Owen T. Carroll field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
