Seton Hall softball exploded for five home runs on Sunday, cruising to a 12-1 victory over the Creighton Bluejays. The Bluejays struck first, scoring the first run of the ball game on a sacrifice fly to right field by Kelsey Allender that plated Jen Daro. That would be the end of the scoring for Creighton, who would be held scoreless over the remaining four innings by the combination of Lauren Fischer and Danielle DeStaso. The Pirates offense got off to a slow start, being held scoreless by junior pitcher Micaela Whitney through the first two innings. In the top of the first the Pirates were unable to benefit from a leadoff walk by Yasmine Harrell as Alexis Walkden grounded into an inning ending double play. The Pirates again had a runner on following a one out walk by DeStaso but couldn’t capitalize. In the top of the third the Pirates offense finally broke through, when they answered with a solo homerun by Faith Laudano which tied up the game. Laudano would go on to hit a second solo homerun with one out in the top of the sixth. The Pirates weren’t finished in the third, taking a 2-1 lead after Sara Foster advanced to third on a flyout by Walkden and scored on a throwing error by the left fielder Michelle Trulin. Leading off the top of the fourth, DeStaso helped herself hitting her sixth homerun of the season to push the Pirates lead to 3-1. Walkden added extra insurance to the Pirates lead with a three run homerun over the left field wall in the top of the fifth, her 15th of the season. The Pirates offense broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring six runs in the final inning. Harrell followed up Laudano’s solo homerun with a single to left that would allow Foster to advance to third and score on the ensuing throwing error by Trulin. Harrell later scored on an RBI double by Whitney Jones. The Pirates would go on to take a 12-1 lead when DeStaso hit her second homerun of the day, a three-run bomb over the centerfield fence that scored Sara Haefeli and Jones. The Pirates offensive onslaught finally came to an end after the pinch-hitter Alannah Basille grounded out to the pitcher Sydnee Eck to retire the side. The Pirates improved to 6-5 in the Big East. DeStaso improved to 8-9 on the year. The Pirates will return to Mike Shepperd, Sr. Field on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. to host Rutgers before opening a three-game series with St. John’s on Saturday, April 18.
