A commuter train coming from New York City experienced delays Tuesday evening after a man, identified only as a “trespasser,” was struck on the NJ Transit tracks in South Orange and later died.
The man was alive and in severe condition when paramedics arrived on the scene, but was pronounced dead at University Hospital, Newark, where he was taken.
The exact time of death is unknown, according to an official working with the NJ Transit police.
NJ Transit Police said the train, a 6343 Morris-Essex line that left New York Penn Station at 4:38 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Summit at 5:52 p.m., hit the man at 5:20 p.m. Many Seton Hall students who travel to New York City for internships may have been affected by the up to 30 min. delays.
Junior Morgan Lubbe, who interns for MTV, was on a train that was stopped for 20 minutes, first at Newark Broad Street and then again a little farther down the track.
“The conductor made an announcement that there was a fatality (the man was not dead when this announcement was made) at South Orange,” she said. “To hear not only that someone got struck by a train but the fact someone was struck at your home station was surreal. It was crazy to hear something like that can happen in your community.”
