The Seton Hall Pirates’ offense exploded on Sunday afternoon at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, N.J., as the Pirates were able to knockoff the Rutgers Scarlet Knights by a score of 16-5.
With this win, the Pirates were able to avoid the series sweep, and improve to 20-17 on the season and remain third in the Big East Conference.
The Pirates scored 16 runs on 17 hits. This was one of the Pirates best offensive game of the season, tying their previous single game runs record of 16 that achieved against Saint Joseph’s and Saint Peter’s back in March.
Offensively today was a great game for nearly every Pirate. By the end of the game, eleven different Pirates recorded a hit.
DJ Ruhlman got the Pirates going in the first inning with a two run RBI double that scored Zach Weigel and Alex Falconi. Ruhlman was later hit in by a Tyler Boyd doubt to right field. After the first inning, the Pirates commanded a 4-0 lead and never looked back.
Catcher, Boyd accounted for over a third of the Pirates’ offense. He led the Hall all afternoon, going 4 for 4 with 6 RBIs.
While the offense was in full throttle, the pitching was shaky in the early innings before the Pirates gained separation form the Scarlet Knights.
Freshman right-hander and starting pitcher for the Pirates, Zach Schellenger only lasted two innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits and one walk.
In the third inning, senior southpaw, Anthony Elia, relieved Schellenger. At this point in the contest, the Pirates only held a mere two run lead.
Elia helped calm the tide, allowing just one earned run on 4 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings of work while striking out 3. Elia went on to collect the win for the Pirates.
The Pirates’ bullpen received other contributions from Testani, Cahill, and Burm who combined to allow one earned run on two innings of work.
Despite only scoring five runs, the Scarlet Knights were able to rack up 11 hits. Rutgers was led by third baseman, Milo Freeman who went 2 for 2 with two walks, a run, and a RBI.
For Rutgers, it was their pitching or lack thereof that was the story of their afternoon. Six different pitchers appeared in the game for the Scarlet Knights. Three of which, including starting pitcher, Gaby Rosa, allowed five earned runs.
The Pirates will look to keep their hot bats alive Wednesday, April 29 as they travel to Jersey City to take on Saint Peter’s. This will be a one game series.
