Students looking to give back to the Seton Hall community will have their opportunity when the University participates in #GivingTuesday.
The global initiative, which will take place on Dec. 2, is a way to combat the chaos of Black Friday and Cyber Monday by encouraging people to give back to the com- munities around them. According to the organization’s website, #GivingTuesday was started by 92Y and the United Nations Foundation in 2012. 92Y, which is also known as the 92nd Street Y in New York City, is a cultural organization that encourages unity and action around the world.
Leanne Pinard, assistant director of Annual Giving in Seton Hall University’s Development Department, said that Seton Hall’s #GivingTuesday is aimed at alumni, students and members of the Seton Hall community.
“We want to make this a campus-wide initiative,” she said.
According to Pinard, several tables will be set up around campus, in places such as the University Center, for students looking to donate. There will also be webpages for students to donate online. Students can choose to donate to the Seton Hall Fund or to a specific college. The website also said that #GivingTuesday was started in the hopes of engaging a global community “to celebrate generosity and to give.”
The organization partners with schools and other organizations around the world. University Advancement and SHU Athletics have teamed up to bring #GivingTuesday to Seton Hall this year, the first year that Seton Hall has participated in the movement.
Pinard said that the donations will go to either a general Seton Hall Fund or funds for specific colleges within the University. The Seton Hall Fund goes toward essentials for running a university, such as chalk and light bulbs for classrooms, scholarships and campus improvement.
Pinard encourages students who cannot make a financial donation to post “unselfies,” taken around campus, tag them with #GivingTuesday and state what they are hoping to give back. She also encourages them to get the word out about #GivingTuesday by telling friends and family.
