LoManto’s goal helps Pirates knock off St. John’s 1-0

The game-winning goal was set up by senior Victor Mansalvas, who dribbled the ball down the field and passed the ball to sophomore Samuel Geiler, who took it to the right side of the field and dumped it off to Andrew LoManto on the left side, who was able to slide and stuff the ball into the back of the net. It was LoManto’s second goal of the season and his fourth of his career.

Sophomore goalkeeper Julian Spindler came up big in net for the Pirates. Spindler made three saves to earn his seventh shutout of the season. Defense once again played out to be key for the Pirates.

With the win, the Pirates move into sixth place in the Big East Conference standings. In the Big East, the top six teams qualify for the conference playoffs.

Now that the Pirates are done with their regular season, finishing 5-7-5, they will now have to wait and see their postseason fate. The Bulter Bulldogs are looming right behind the Pirates in the conference standings. On Friday they will be matched up against Xavier, and the Pirates will hope Xavier earns the win. Otherwise the Pirates’ playoff hopes will be lost.

This was also a big night for the Pirates’ record books. Thursday night’s victory for the Pirates was their first Big East road win in 25 attempts. Their last road Big East win came at Syracuse on September 18, 2009.
