The team is sitting pretty coming off of their success in New Haven, Connecticut this past weekend at the Yale Women’s Intercollegiate.
The Pirates finished fourth overall this weekend, collectively, registering a second straight sub-300 round with a 13-over-par, 297, on Sunday at Yale. The Pirates finished the three-round event at 46-over-par with a 306-295-297-898, 11 strokes behind Yale. Harvard finished second, six strokes ahead of the Pirates, while Big East rival Xavier placed third, four strokes ahead of the blue and white. Head coach Sara Doell was pleased with her team’s performance.
“The course was a more challenging one, Overall we played very well. We’re feeling really good about our matchups for next week.”
The Pirates travel to Big East rivals St. Johns in Queens, N.Y., on Monday Oct. 6th where they will compete in the St. John’s Invitational. The Pirates opponents include St. John’s University and Saint Francis College. The team will be playing at the oldest golf course in the United States, Saint Andrew’s Golf Club. This will be the first time that the team will be competing in this event as well as playing this historic course. Although it is an individual event, the whole team will be going to the event, giving the girls the chance to stay competitive.
The team is staying busy by setting and working toward achieving their own personal goals. They each work on their own drills and worked on what they need to do to better prepare themselves for next week’s invitational, says coach Doell.
“We’ve been doing a lot of good individual practice. Each player has a special practice plan created for them for each practice,” she said.
One main component of practicing this upcoming week is to stay focused and simply just keep working hard.
“If it’s not broke, don’t fix it,” Doell said regarding the team’s practice mentality for the upcoming week in between playing. “We’ve been going over staying focused. These girls luckily get along really well. They bring cohesiveness and fun to this individual sport.”
This year is different than the past year for two main reason: two impressive freshmen on the team in Macky Fouse and Cassie Pentelas. Coach Doell didn’t have the opportunity last season to gain incoming freshmen because of a full roster, but these two freshmen are showing success on and off the course.
“Our freshmen are adjusting well, they add energy to the team. This is the first time in a year that we’ve had freshmen on the team. They’ve played very well and add character to the team,” she said.
The women are already looking forward to playing in the spring. Conference play picks up this time of year which could give the Pirates a chance to claim the title of Big East Champions for the second year in a row. Fall action concludes in Princeton, N.J., for the Princeton Invitational on Oct. 18th and 19th.
