The Pirates defeated Columbia 1-0 on Wednesday. The shutout is the blue and white’s fourth of the season, all with sophomore Julian Spindler holding the fort in goal.

A penalty kick in the 87th minute from sophomore mid-fielder Samuel Geiler found the back of the net resulting in the game’s only goal. The goal by Geiler was his first of the season. The Pirate’s broke their three-game losing streak and came up with their first win since they played Monmouth at home on September 23rd.
The first half lacked in dangerous scoring chances for either team, with Columbia maintaining possession for a large portion of the beginning of the first half, but failing to deliver on the scoreboard.
A cross by Geiler that bounced across the end line almost gave the Pirates an early lead. Later, Geiler's pass found senior Kai Greene, who centered to Konrad Plewa but he could not muster a strong attempt.
Soon after, the Lions attempted to take advantage of a corner of their own. Francisco Agrest crossed to Mike Abraham at the near post, but directed a shot directly over the cross bar.
The Hall went on to lead Columbia in shots in the first half 4-3.
The pirates had numerous chances to score in the second half. 10 minutes in, Samuel Geiler had a close shot with the help of a cross from Freshman John Philbin, which Geiler headed cleanly far post, but ultimately wide of the net.
In the 69th minute, senior Victor Manosalvas sent the first shot on goal in the game. He nearly scored again 12 minutes later, but his close-range attempt was blocked by a defender.
After falling behind in the 86th minute, Columbia tried for a late rally, sending it’s only shot on goal just 20 seconds after Geiler's score, which was ultimately handled by Spindler.
With only two minutes remaining, Julian Kennedy was called for a foul 25 yards out. Antonio Matarazzo attempted to tie with a free kick for Columbia, only to have it sail over the cross bar.
The Pirates will come home to Seton Hall for their next game at Owen T. Carroll Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Big East rival Xavier.
